Derby, Vermont- About two dozen Boston University College students have to figure out how to fit court appearances into their academic schedules. That's because their weekend ski trip to Canada ended with a drug bust at the border. It happened Monday at the US/Canadian Border Crossing in Derby.
Vermont State Police cite dozens of students for alcohol, marijuana and ecstasy. What was supposed to be a fun ski trip to Quebec for the Boston University Ski Club over President's Day weekend, did not have a happy ending.
"The bus in front of us , I think they got charged with minor in possession of alcohol," says a U. Mass student who wants to remain anonymous. He was in one of the eight buses stopped by police. He says he saw everything go down, with Border Patrol, State Police and drug dogs.
"After that bus got caught, essentially they were checking through all the buses searching them and pulling everyone off the bus and going through all the bags and stuff," says the student.
And what happened next turned this ski trip over the border into a trip many will not forget.
"I heard that the BU buses behind us were all caught with stuff, like whatever you guys heard."
What we heard from police was marijuana and ecstasy. In all, 26 students were issued citations for minor possession of alcohol violations. Four women between the ages of 19 and 22 were cited with drug possession.
For the students who watched nearby it was a lesson learned, "It was a stupid decision to try and bring drugs over the American border, I mean they are going to find you," says the U. Mass student.
