The Challenge of Vermont's 2013 Budget

Posted: Updated:

People in Vermont are sounding off on Governor Peter Shumlin's proposed budget for 2013.

The state no longer has federal stimulus money to depend on and lawmakers are still waiting to find out how much money FEMA will provide for Irene-related costs. That combination is making organizations, as well as state agencies, extremely anxious about the upcoming year.

The state is facing a nearly $50 million budget gap, significantly less than the last few years. However, some lawmakers say it will be more difficult to fill because there are very few areas left to cut.

It's the reason the Shumlin Administration has proposed a budget that holds state funds steady in next year's budget. There is a catch, though. Lawmakers say you can only hold funding level for so long before it starts to take its toll. That's what the House and Senate are trying to avoid but the task is easier said than done.

Some agencies are expected to ask for slight increases in their funding but it all depends on how much federal funding the state receives, post Irene.
