VT DMV Waiting for New Computer System

Posted: Updated:

An outdated computer system at Vermont's DMV is causing some trouble. The state has already pumped more than $18 million on a new system but the department is still waiting to see the upgrades.

Commissioner, Robert Ide says a man was recently provided a new license plate on a Thursday, only to find out at least two days later at the US/Canadian border that his registration had not been updated. "It showed that his car registration was designated to the previous owner of that license plate number and not to him," said Ide.

Ide said the current system is 40 years old and it usually takes 24 hours for information to update.

However, the state has a new system and one it's already paid at least $18 million for it over the last 6 years. It's not installed, yet, because the original company in the deal was sold.

Hewlett Packard has found themselves the owner of the contract but there's more waiting to be done. Ide says HP thinks it could take more than two years to set up the new system.

In the meantime, Ide says the current program is still solid and dependable.
