Burlington, Vermont-  GE Healthcare cut less than 100 jobs in Burlington.

"Any layoff, any downsizing or reduction is not good," says John Vowles of the Vermont Department of Labor.

We received a tip to our newsroom Thursday morning alerting us GE Healthcare was cutting more than 2,000 jobs worldwide so we called GE officials and though they would not go on camera, they did send us a written statement.

"This process has been extremely difficult for everyone to undertake and we considered many alternate cost-cutting actions before arriving at the decision we've reached."

GE wouldn't tell us how many employees lost their job or in which departments but did tell us its less than 100 in Burlington. No more layoffs are planned.

There are some signs that show, despite the recent layoffs, Vermont is doing much better than the national average.

"Unemployment is lowest in this area in the state and we're below the national average," says Vowles.

As of November 2011, Vermont unemployment was at 5.3%. National unemployment sits at 8.5%.
